  17. <p>A rare gene may lead to discoveries about the immune system
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     David was born without an immune system, and for 12 years he
  20. lived inside a sterile plastic bubble that protected him from
  21. the outside world. Now, nearly 10 years after David's death,
  22. doctors have isolated the faulty gene responsible for his rare
  23. condition. In an article in Cell, researchers report that the
  24. mutation causes immune cells to produce defective copies of a
  25. receptor for interleukin-2, one of the most important molecular
  26. regulators of the body's defense system. Eventually scientists
  27. hope to transplant normal copies of the gene into the blood
  28. cells of affected children, thereby curing them. The research
  29. might also lead to new strategies for restoring the damaged
  30. immune system of people who suffer from AIDS.
